How to Troubleshoot and Fix Kenmore Range F90, F91, F92, F93, F94 Error Codes

Learn how to troubleshoot and fix Kenmore range error codes F90, F91, F92, F93, and F94 with our step-by-step guide. Identify issues with the oven door lock motor assembly, door light switch, wiring, or main control board. Access detailed instructions with images to diagnose and resolve these common errors on your Kenmore range.

If your Kenmore range is displaying error codes F90, F91, F92, F93, or F94, it indicates a problem that needs troubleshooting to identify the faulty component. These errors can be caused by several issues, including a malfunctioning oven door lock motor assembly, a defective door light switch, wiring issues, or a faulty main control board. Follow this step-by-step guide to diagnose and fix the problem.

Step 1: Access the Rear of the Range

First, unplug the range from the power source and carefully pull it out so you can access the back of the unit. Remove the rear access panel by taking out the screws along the bottom lip of the panel (see image below).

Step 2: Inspect the Oven Door Lock Motor Assembly

With the rear panel removed, locate the oven door lock motor assembly at the top right. Using an ohm meter, check the wiring between the main control board and the micro switch on the door lock assembly. To access the wiring, you may also need to remove the top console access panel. If the wiring is intact and the connector is securely seated at the control, proceed to test the micro switch on the oven door lock motor assembly. If the switch is open, it's faulty and needs to be replaced. Additionally, check the motor coil for continuity; it should be a closed circuit. Also, inspect for any obstructions that could prevent the lock motor rod or cam from operating correctly.

Step 3: Check the Door Light Switch

If the oven door lock motor assembly checks out, the next component to inspect is the door light switch. This switch is activated when the oven door is closed. To access the door switch, open the oven door and remove the screws located under the overhang of the range top. Once these screws are removed, lift the range top to gain access to the door switch. Unplug the wiring harness connected to the door switch and test the switch with a meter. If the switch is faulty, remove it by squeezing the top and bottom metal retaining clips and pushing it through the front of the range.

Step 4: Assess the Main Control Board

If all the previous checks have shown that the oven door lock motor assembly, door light switch, and wiring are functioning correctly, the issue likely lies with the main control board. The main control board is responsible for managing all of the range's operations, including the door lock and safety systems. A malfunction in this board can cause the F90, F91, F92, F93, or F94 error codes to appear.

How to Access the Main Control Board

To access the main control board, follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the Range: Before starting any work, ensure the range is unplugged from the power source to avoid electrical shock.
  2. Remove the Rear Access Panel: If you haven’t already, remove the rear access panel by unscrewing the screws along the bottom lip of the panel. This will give you access to the internal components.
  3. Locate the Main Control Board: The main control board is usually located near the top of the range, behind the control panel. It may be covered by a protective casing that you’ll need to remove.
  4. Inspect the Control Board: Once you’ve located the main control board, inspect it for any visible signs of damage such as burn marks, loose connections, or corrosion. These could indicate that the board has failed.

Replacing the Main Control Board

If you determine that the main control board is faulty, you will need to replace it. Here’s how:

  1. Order a Replacement Control Board: Ensure that you purchase the correct control board compatible with your Kenmore range model. If you need the control board and are unsure of the part number required for your model, you can submit a question, and we will be glad to help. We can't provide the part number for the control board you need without your model number because they vary from model to model.
  2. Disconnect the Wires: Carefully disconnect all wiring harnesses connected to the control board. It’s a good idea to take a photo or label the wires to ensure proper reconnection later.
  3. Remove the Control Board: Unscrew the mounting screws holding the control board in place and gently remove the board from its housing.
  4. Install the New Control Board: Position the new control board in the housing and secure it with the mounting screws. Reconnect all wiring harnesses to the appropriate terminals.
  5. Reassemble the Range: Replace the protective casing, reattach the rear access panel, and plug the range back into the power source.
  6. Test the Range: After completing the installation, test the range to ensure that the error codes have been resolved and that the range is functioning properly.
